What Is a CAPTCHA?

CAPTCHA (an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") is a security step that functions as a question-and-answer authentication method. This security measure protects your account and emails from various types of spam and prevents unauthorized password decryption attempts, email access, or form submission by subjecting you to a simple test designed to verify that a human—not a computer—is trying to access the account. These tests are randomized and must be answered correctly to grant you access to your content.

  • With CAPTCHA V1, users had to complete a challenge consisting of deciphering distorted text and entering it in a field to respond correctly.
  • With CAPTCHA V2, reCAPTCHA no longer plays the primary role in abuse detection but a secondary one. Some users can validate their choice with a single click, without necessarily needing to answer a question.
  • With CAPTCHA V3, a score is generated that indicates whether an interaction is suspicious, sparing users from having to complete an intermediate step—they don't need to do anything if their usage isn't flagged as suspicious.

Why Does Google Use CAPTCHA Tests?

Google is committed to protecting all your information. CAPTCHA protects your account from digital access by ensuring that only a human with the correct password can access it. While computers can create distorted images and process responses, they cannot decipher these images or solve the problem the way a human can within a limited time frame. Many web services, including Google, use CAPTCHAs to prevent unauthorized account access. You'll also find them on sites providing access to sensitive information, such as bank accounts or administrative dashboards.

When Does Google Use CAPTCHAs?

Google uses CAPTCHA tests to strengthen security at the most sensitive account access points, for example when:

  • you sign up for a Google service (Gmail, YouTube);
  • you sign up for any edition of a Google Workspace account;
  • you change the password on an existing account;
  • you configure Google services for a third-party application or device (for example, iPhone, Outlook, ActiveSync).

What Should I Do if I Can't Decipher the CAPTCHA Image?

If you don't see a CAPTCHA image or have difficulty deciphering it, refresh the page to display another image.

CAPTCHA tests are typically image-based. However, audio versions are available for users with visual impairments. To access the audio version, click the international accessibility icon (a wheelchair symbol) located next to the text field. The alt text for this image is: "Listen, then enter the digits you hear." CAPTCHA tests are not available for people who are deaf and blind. CAPTCHA V3 is primarily invisible and only presents a test if your login activity is flagged as suspicious. It's clear that Google will release even more secure versions of CAPTCHA in the years to come.

CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart." It's a security measure that verifies you're human by presenting a test that computers cannot easily solve.
What's the difference between CAPTCHA V1, V2, and V3?
V1 requires users to decipher distorted text. V2 uses a simple click checkbox for most users. V3 generates a score based on user behavior and is mostly invisible—users only see a test if suspicious activity is detected.
When does Google use CAPTCHA tests?
